You Can Know You Have Eternal Life
Ever had a medical test done, then had to wait for the results? Sometimes the waiting is worse than the test, because uncertainty does something to us. Imagine the doctor calling and saying, "We have your results — but we'd prefer you just spend the next several years wondering." Nobody wants to live that way.
Yet plenty of Christians live exactly like that with God. They believe in Jesus, they're trying to follow him, but ask "Do you know you have eternal life?" and the answer is "I hope so… I think so… I guess I'll find out when I get there."
The whole point of the letter lands here: God doesn't want his children wondering. He wants them knowing.
Your assurance isn't based on how tightly you're holding onto God. It's based on how securely God is holding onto you.
I Can Know Because of What God Has Done
"Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God... This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." — 1 John 5:1, 4 (NIV)
Notice where John starts — not with what you've accomplished, but with what God has done. You've been born of God. Christianity isn't fundamentally self-improvement or turning over a new leaf; it's receiving new life. And when God gives new life, evidence starts to appear — changed desires, changed relationships, a growing love for God. Not perfectly, but genuinely. The evidence of salvation isn't perfection; it's transformation.
And the victory doesn't come from trying harder or getting religious enough. "Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God" (v. 5). Picture a father walking a small child through a busy parking lot. The child wraps a hand around dad's finger — but whose grip are you really trusting? If that little hand slips, dad tightens his. Your faith may sometimes feel weak. Your Savior isn't.
I Can Know Because of What God Has Said
"Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." — 1 John 5:12 (NIV)
John moves from our experience to something more solid: testimony. We believe testimony every day — we weren't there, but we trust reliable witnesses and records. So if we accept human testimony, how much more should we accept God's testimony about his own Son? Our faith doesn't rest on wishful thinking; it rests on what God has revealed.
That matters most when our feelings disagree with what God has said. There are mornings you don't feel spiritual, weeks you struggle, times you fail and wonder, Am I really saved? This is the difference: doubt looks inward and asks "What do I feel?" Faith looks upward and asks "What has God said?" Feelings change; God's testimony doesn't. And he has said it plainly — "God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son" (v. 11). Eternal life isn't mainly something Jesus puts in your hand; it's found in Jesus himself. The question was never "Am I good enough?" It's "Do I have the Son?"
Because I Know, I Can Live With Confidence
"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us." — 1 John 5:14 (NIV)
Watch the progression: verse 13 says you may know, and verse 14 says therefore you can have confidence. Assurance isn't just information stored in your head — knowing where you stand with God changes how you live. You can pray with confidence, because the God who created the universe actually hears his child. You don't have to wonder whether you're allowed into his presence; you belong to him.
And that confidence doesn't make us casual about sin — it makes us want to fight it. If you get discouraged because you struggle with sin, consider this: a fish flopping on the bank is struggling because it's alive. A dead fish doesn't struggle. Sometimes your fight against sin is itself evidence that God has made you alive. You hate what you once accepted and confess what you once excused — not perfectly, but increasingly.
The Bigger Story
John closes his whole letter with one blunt line: "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols" (v. 21). It sounds disconnected, but it's the perfect ending. An idol is a substitute — something we trust to give us the security, identity, and life only God can give. Money can't give you eternal life. Success can't. Religion, morality, church attendance, your own accomplishments — none of them can. Jesus can. So John puts down his pen and says: you've found the real thing; don't settle for substitutes.
That's the whole point of why he wrote: "so that you may know that you have eternal life" (v. 13). Stop staring inward asking "Am I enough?" and turn toward Jesus with one question — do I have the Son? Because the strength of your salvation isn't in the hand reaching up. It's in the strength of the Savior reaching down. Your assurance isn't "I'll never let go of Jesus." It's "Jesus will never let go of me."

Read 1 John 5:1–13 slowly this week, and memorize verse 13. Then, the next time doubt shows up, try one simple swap:
- When doubt asks "What do I feel?", answer with "What has God said?"
- Where am I quietly trusting a substitute — money, success, my own record — for the security only Jesus gives?
Name the substitute, and this week put your confidence back where it belongs: in the Son, not in your grip on him.
